この間長男が生まれて、想像のとおり僕達は毎日忙しくしている。
だけど、約束通りに5月分のペーパークラフトをどうにか完成させた。

今回のクラフトのタイトルは「Go Bananas」。僕はサルを嫌いな人はいないと勝手に思ってて、そのうえこいつはちっちゃい赤い車に乗ってるので、魅力度がさらにアップじゃない？！前のクラフトと比べたら更にレベルアップしたと思う。形をもっと面白くしよう思って、色もより派手にして見た。僕は結構満足してるので、皆さんも作って、楽しく遊べたらいいな～と思ってる。

今回のクラフトをベースに、次のやつも作るかもしれない。2匹のサルが机の上でレースしてるところを想像したら楽しそう。

My wife recently gave birth to our first boy, so as you can imagine I have been a little distracted to say the least. However I somehow managed to come through on my promise of producing another paper toy for May.

The title of this toy is “Go Bananas”. I decided that everyone loves monkeys, and to make things even better
this one’s in a little red car!

I feel that I’ve upped the ante since my last effort, with a more satisfying shape and a more lively colour scheme.
I’m pretty pleased with the end result and hope you all enjoy constructing and playing with him. I may use this as a platform for my next piece, as I think it would be cool to have a couple of these guys having a race on my desktop.

皆さん気が付いたと思いますが、僕はスカルの大ファンです。なぜかというと、スカルはホラーの基本のイメージの一つだと思ってるから。平凡なイメージにスカルを足したら、雰囲気が完全に変わる。なので、この間スカルイラストを描こうと決めた。新しいテクニックも試してみたくて、結果は上のイラスト。

最近スカルをテーマにしてる面白いサイトを2つも発見した。一つは「I Want Your Skull」。このサイトでは色んなアーティストのスカルアートを紹介する。それから、サイトの制作者Ryan Augustさんが選んだイラストを特集にしてる高質な雑誌もたまに出版してる。Ryanさん自身もイラストレーターで、彼のサイトはこちら。この間、僕のアートを紹介して頂いて、そのおかげでスカルアートをもっと描きたくなった。

２番目のサイトは「Skull-A-Day」。このブログではアーティストのNoahさんは毎日自分のオリジナルスカルアートを一枚紹介している。これはすごいことだと思う。なんと今までの作品は300枚を越えてる！毎日全く違うアートを出してるにもかかわらず、クォリティーが凄く高くて、Noahさんがいったいいつ寝てるのかは謎です。

As most readers will have guessed I am a big fan of skulls, as I feel they are one of the classic key elements of horror imagery. Adding a skull to an otherwise mundane image can completely change the whole feel of the piece. This week I wanted to come up with a skull-based piece and also felt like trying out some new techniques. The result is the above illustration.

Recently I also came across a couple of interesting skull sites. The first one is called I Want Your Skull, which introduces skull and skeleton based work from a wide range of artists. A couple of times a year they also produce a very high quality fanzine containing some of the author Ryan August’s favourite pieces. Ryan is also an artist in his own right and you can see his work here. He was also kind enough to feature some of my work this month which inspired me to do more skull pieces.

The second site is called Skull-A-Day and is a blog where author Noah introduces a new piece of his original skull-based artwork every day. It is quite an achievement to say the least, and he has now produced work for over 300 days! All of the pieces are of a surprisingly high quality so it is difficult to imagine that the artist has any time to sleep at all.

ホラーウッドの新マスコットキャラクター｢マイケル」を紹介します。
Tシャツに使えるようなシンプルなデザインを作りたくて･･･で、結果はこれです。
このキャラクターのインスピレーション元は多分言わなくとも分かるでしょう…笑
このイラストは初めてブラッシュのツールをちゃんと利用して描いてみた。おかげで線がもっと柔らかく、手書きっぽく出来たと思う。

近々このデザインを手作りシルクスクリーンTシャツにする予定なので、引き続きブログを要チェック！

Introducing the new Horrorwood mascot “Michael”.
I wanted to come up with a simple design that I could use on a shirt and this was the result.　I think that the inspiration behind the piece is probably obvious…
I also made use of the brush tool properly for the first time, which perhaps helps makes the lines a little softer and more hand-drawn in appearance.

Hopefully I will be printing up some handmade silk screen t-shirts soon featuring this fella, so watch this space.

テーマは機嫌のいいヤツとおばけパソコン…
今回はもう少し複雑で細かいクラフトを作りたかった。それと、ペーパークラフトクリエーターの敵「白いスペース」を出来るだけなくしたかった。

このクラフトを作るにはちょっと手間かかる（特にパーツを切る事）。でも、自分で言うのも何だけど、完成したら満足できると思う。

Here is my latest original papercraft creation entitled “Ghosts in the Machine” - a happy man and his haunted computer.

This time I wanted to create something a little more detailed and complex. I also wanted to eliminate blank spaces, which I think is a problem that plagues all paper model creators.

This fellow takes a little time to put together and the cutting in particular is a bit fiddly. However (though I say so myself) I found it very satisfying to complete.

Here is my second attempt at an original paper toy, entitled “Hair!”
I based this toy on my last one and made a few adjustments.
I added a cap and lengthened the legs. I feel that the overall balance is a lot better with this one, and I also think that simple pop designs work best with paper craft.

去年Readymechのペーパークラフトについてアップしたけど、かれらの新プロジェクトは興味深いのでまた紹介します。今回Readymechは写真サイトCorbisとコラボで、完全に使える紙のピンホール・カメラ（針穴写真機）を作った！色んなきれいなデザインがあって、全てが無料でダウンロード可能。組み立てるのは大変そうだけど、それにしても凄くよく出来ていると思う。

Though I have blogged about Readymech before, their new project is well worth a mention. Readymech in conjunction with photography site Corbis have created some beautiful and fully functional paper pinhole cameras. There are several different designs - all free and downloadable. They look a little complicated to construct but are still an amazing achievement.

僕の新シリーズ「Visitors from the Dark Star」から第3番目のビジターを紹介したい。
このキャラクターは「口」という概念がら始まって、口を描いてから残りを考えていた。

スタイルに関しては、60年代っぽいモンスターを作りたかった。完成品を見たら、ビートルズのアニメ「イエローサブマリン」に出て来たモンスターをちょっと思い出した。

Here is visitor number 3 from my new series “Visitors from the Dark Star” (hereinafter to be known as VFTDS). The concept behind this one was obviously mouths. I started with the mouths and built the character around them.

As far as the style is concerned I went with a kind of 60s style monster, and the end result reminded me slightly of some of the creatures that appeared in the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine animation.

このキャラクターで、科学的でクラシックなSFの雰囲気を出したかった。
昔のスター・トレックに出て来そうな敵のリーダみたいなヤツ。
昔のSFと同じく、ちょっと恐ろしいと同時に、ばかばかしい部分も必要だと思う。

Here is the second creature in my new “Visitors from the Dark Star” series.
I wanted to create a very scientific, classic sci-fi feel with this one -　like something that may have appeared as an enemy leader in Star Trek.

I wanted him to be both slightly menacing and also a little bit laughable, as is usually the case with classic sci-fi baddies.

ホラーウッドは主にホラーをテーマにしている。だけど、昔からSFに基づいているイラストも描いている。だから、こういったSFのイラストはDARK STAR（ダーク・スター）というラベル（テーマ名？）で統一している。最近、なんとなくダークスターの方に興味を持っている。なぜかという、多分SFの世界ではもっとデザイン的で抽象的なイラストが可能だと思うから。

なので、この間「Visitors from the Dark Star」という新プロジェクトを始めた。このプロジェクトで色んなキャラクターを作り出す予定で、色々な宇宙人が織り成す世界を作りたい。透明感や色合いなどを使って、もっと面白いキャラクターを作ろうと思っている。最終的に、このイラストを本に編さんして、各キャラクターにバックストーリーなどを付けたいなぁ。

今の時点では、２つのキャラクターが完成。新しいやつが出来次第、アップします。
このシリーズが続くように…

Within Horrorwood (which is of course usually horror themed) I have for a while now also
been producing science fiction based pieces under the label Dark Star. Recently I have felt inspired to draw more on the Dark Star side of things, maybe because science fiction allows for more abstract or design based pieces.

I have started a new project called “Visitors from the Dark Star”, which is a series of single character designs, which I hope will build up into a whole pantheon of strange creatures.
I have been playing with colour and transparencies and the like to try to create more interesting characters. I would ideally like to collect these illustrations in book form much like a bestiary, with descriptions of where each creature comes from and the like.

I am on a roll with 2 pieces under my belt so far, so fingers crossed for the continuation of this series. I will post new aliens as and when they arrive.

大きなおもちゃはたくさんあるけど、これぞ正にビッグなヤツだ！
ジェームス・ジャービスのコミック「Vortigern’s Machine」から出て来た「The Troll」は確実にビッグ級に入る。

このシリーズのフィギュアは他に全て揃っていたものの、こいつはあまりにも大きく、高級なモノだったので、最初は手にすることを諦めてた。ところが、またネットオークションのおかげで（せいで？）半額で手に入るチャンスが現れたので、嫁からの大事な許可を得て、購入をしてしまった…

こいつが届いて、実際に目の前にあったら、サイズに本当にビックリした。「スペースないから、大きいのは買わないで」と言ってた嫁に深くわびる… The Trollは小さい子供とサイズが変わらず、箱に入ったら更にビッグ。証拠として、以下の写真を撮って、彼を屋根裏に追放した。

いつか自分のおもちゃ専用部屋を持つのを楽しみにしている。その日が来たら、The Trollと彼の仲間を飾る予定です。

There are big toys and then there are BIG toys. James Jarvis‘ “The Troll” from his comic Vortigern’s Machine definitely falls into the BIG category. I own all the other figures in this series which are already on the large size and had resided myself to the fact that I would never own this bad boy, because of both his size and cost.

However once again internet auctions provided me with an all too tempting opportunity to get The Troll for half price. After the necessary consultation with my wife I made the purchase.

When he arrived and I beheld him in all his glory even I was taken aback and had to apologise profusely to my wife. The Troll is the size of a small child and his box he is truly massive. I took a few photos as evidence and then he was banished to the loft. I am looking forward to the day when I have that “toy room” I have always dreamed of and have enough room to display The Troll and all his buddies.
